I have bad astigmatism in one eye, and therefore cannot wear contacts as a result, so I am told by the opthometrist. I have worn glasses since grade 9 (I am 21 now) and don't seem to mind them. I have one pair that are rimless and another pair with silver frames.
I am not sure as to where you live, but where I live an exam is roughly $60. Most insurance plans cover at least 50% of the cost, which helps. Also, Walmart has a great deal for glasses and they can fit you with contacts there, if you prefer. You can do a trial period with contacts for around $25 (this includes fitting and testing your particular eye strength, as well as one pair of contacts.) Also, keep in mind that some insurance companies have a limit as to how much they will cover - ie: $200 max.
Also, if your eyes have two different prescription strengths, you are looking at a greater cost for contacts and thus glasses might be more practical.

I personally prefer contacts because I don't have to worry about something happening to my glasses. The only thing about contact is that you're more prone to infections in the eye, even if you clean your contacts well. Contacts are good for a lot of people who get over the fear of putting a piece of plastic in their eye. I wear glasses when I'm at home though to give my eyes a nice break. Contacts are decently comfortable if they fit correctly. Not all glasses are thick and overbearing.

Both are good. I prefer contacts because I don't enjoy the pressure on the bridge of my nose from my glasses. My glasses aren't heavy but wearing them all day you start to feel them. I generally wear contacts everyday. If you don't mind touching your eyes contacts are the way to go. It makes it easier to wear sunglasses with contacts, and in certain jobs contacts are better. I personally sleep with mine in like twice a week while I am at work. So overall I recommend contacts.
An exam usually costs me close to $100.

i dont know how much an eye exam is but I do prefer glasses. I have tried contacts but they were just too much of a hassle for me. I have such bad vision that when I would put one contact in, it would be like double vision and I couldn't focus to put the other one in. They say that if you like to wear glasses that you are going to hate contacts but if you hate glasses you'll love contacts and it's true. I would stick with glasses for now to get used to them and see what they are like and if you dont like them then you can always get contacts. I got really frustrated with contacts and it was just a waste of money for me.

I prefer glasses, but I've worn them for so long. I tried out contacts but didn't like the way I looked in them or the way they felt. (I did successfully wear contacts many years ago as a teenager)
Get both..you'll need the glasses as a backup in case your eyes get infected from the contacts or for at night after you take the contacts out.
An eye exam is around $70.

It depends on what type of vision you have... if you are near-sighted, I've found that people prefer contacts as they are usually needed throughout the day. However, if you are far-sighted and need assistance in reading, I would suggest glasses. I prefer contacts myself, the night-and-day kind that allow you to sleep in the contacts. These are good for sports or any other activity that require moving.

That depends on the person. Some people can't imagine putting their finger in their eye to put a lens in or their eyes can't handle the contacts. Others like it, as it makes them look better, doesn't bother them, etc. I think contacts look better on me and I don't mind them, but sometimes they can be a pain.

I decide whether I'm going to wear glasses or contacts depending on what I'm wearing or going.
