My cousin is an anesthisiologist (the doctor that administers the epidural). NEways, her and I actually discussed this subject before and she said this...you can get a tattoo but there are in fact some anesthisiologists that will not perform an epidural on you NOT because they are scared of damage to the body but they are concerned about messing up the tattoo and having the patient try to sue or whatsoever because of it. Most anesthisiologists will give you an epidural there even if you have a tattoo there...it will not harm your body.

That is absolutely bogus! It's not true at all! I did not have an epidural as I had a completely natural childbirth experience, but I realize not every woman is willing and/or able to do that. However, I have a full waistband tattoo that goes all the way around. The reason I mention this is because I also have back problems periodically due to muscle spasms. When my back goes out, generally the only thing that helps is going to the ER and getting a shot of demerol followed by pills for a few days. Guess where the demerol shot goes? Yup! On my hip...which means right through part of the tattoo!
There are all kinds of 'old wives tales' concerning tattoos and childbirth...this one just happens to include both of them.
Don't worry about it...get your lower back tattoo if that's what you want!
Good luck and happy inking!

I have a lower back tattoo and was able to get an epidural. I think as long as the tattoo is completely healed then there shouldn't be a problem..... If you are really worried about this, talk to your doctor and tattoo artist to be sure that having a tattoo on your lower back won't interfere with having an epidural.

I have a lower back tattoo and heard that too, so my friend (who was pregnant at the time) asked her doctor and she said that once it is healed the inked is locked into the cells. She said that some doctors won't put a needle directly through the tattoo, but having one won't prevent you from getting an epidural.

i have a tattoo on my lower back, and there were no problems when i got my epidural. the epidural actually went in a lot higher than i had expected.... it didn't go anywhere near my tattoo, which is about 6 inches long and 4 inches tall.

I've heard the same thing, but I also have a tattoo on my back AND have had an epidural. But mine is small and really low, so it may just not have interfered.
Here's a link from an OB with the Mayo Clinic Ive just foudn for ya!

Not True!
You can't however donate
blood, for a year, after getting
a tattoo. My niece has a large
piece on her lower back and
it didn't stop her from having
an epidural later on.(4 months)
