This always happens to me, and I swear by this, cut a small triangle in the tip of the nail. The nail will grow inward to try to fill the gap. works overnight!

OPTION #1 if you do not have insurance:
Go get a pedicure - they will fix it for you! Seriously, they do it all the time. Until you get to a nail salon, put some antibiotic ointment like Neosporin on a band aid and cover that toe. You can take Advil and Tylenol (both) for the pain and the Advil will reduce swelling. Buy some topical numbing gel, like the stuff you can use for sore teeth and gums, and put it on the nail if it's really throbbing.
OPTION #2 If you do have insurance, call your Primary Care Physician. Tell them you are in agony and need to be seen today. If they cannot see you today then go to a walk in clinic. Most walk in clinics will charge you the normal co-payment for an office visit and they will fix you up right away. Usually the walk in clinics get you in & out pretty quickly.
Hope you get some relief soon!

dear yahoo member
I had 2 ingrown toe nails that were VERY PAINFUL!
I had to have surgery but her are some simple things to try....
(1)-Soak the toenail that's ingrown in hot water with ebson's salt. do this every day for at least an hour.
(2)-If you can pry the nail out and insert some cotton balls so that when It starts to grow back it will grow straight out of the inflamed area of the skin.
(3)-use peroxide to kill any infection
If all fails than yes you will need it removed but be happy it's not for ever...why you ask? well mine are my 2 big toes that got rememoved for ever!!! but you can't really tell

Gently rub Neosporin or a pain killer on it to kill the pain. You can take some aspirin also.
Get a little cotton ball and pull off some tiny pieces.
Take a toothpick or something small and pointed. Pack cotton under the edge of the nail, it has to be lifted up so it will grown out straight. Leave it in for as long as it will stay. If it falls out pack it again. It will take a week or so for the nail to grow out.
NEVER FILE YOUR TOENAILS DOWN AT THE CORNERS.
FILE STRAIGHT ACROSS ONLY.

My father swears by this one. Do all the obvious things like file straight accross, cut the tiny V in the edge, but also try this: File accross the top surface of that nail. This will flatten the surface, as well as thin it. The nail will pull itself out of the skin, eventually.
Since that top is thinner, there will be som pressure relief.

you should go to the doctor. there are two kinds of foot doctors.
go to either one. don't cut your nails so short.
an ingrown toe nail can require surgery to fix if left to long.

It's very hard to fix these once they get messed up. Sometimes you can cut the very tippy corner that is affected and it will relieve the pressure and get well, but more often than not, it is just a cycle of getting almost well and getting infected. If it doesn't clear up, go see your doctor because it can get pretty messy. I had to remove my nail to fix mine. Very long recovery time and painful.
