The benefits of legalizing are obvious. Taxes, control, eliminating some of the power of illegal gangs trafficking. You can throw out the regular stoner answers that do little to add other than "I like to smoke". As someone who had to supervise oilfield workers that were on call for 24/7 in the past I would say that the harmful effects may not be near as easy to discern. My biggest concern is the effect of marijuana in the workplace once it is legal. Generally speaking the person that is drunk in the workplace is a lot easier to spot than the person who is smoking dope. Is the impairment level the same? Worse? What about drivers who are under the influence. Are we just adding to the epidemic of mindless deaths that is drunk driving by adding stoned driving? In the end my question is does the decriminalization of marijuana lead to the social acceptance of it, which in turn would increase the use, or worse the abuse? Can the government afford to take the financial short term gain, at the expense of increased cost down the road? Knowing the government the answer is an obvious "yes". If not this government then one soon. Perhaps the question should read "When".

You have no ACCURATE FACTS: Canada (as a NATION) has been involved in EVERY war in the 20th & 21st Centuries: from Afghanistan, Iraqi (1991), Bosnia, Vietnam, Korea, World War II, Spanish & Russian Civil Wars, World War I, back to the Boer War. In Canada, marijuana possesion IS illegal, but rarely enforced

The Netherlands fought in World War II, Korea, and are members of NATO.

Your "Logic" is blown out of the water when you view the map of Marijuana-legality... look at the countries where it IS Legal and you'll find them OFTEN involved in wars throughout history. And "decriminalization" in many of those countries still makes the TRAFFIC or possession of more that 1-5 ounces CRIMINAL.

Just because weed makes YOU and your Doobie-buddies too damned lazy to do anything, doesn't mean that a nation would become a bunch of Dorito-eating couch-clowns

Some questions are just funny. Thanks for a laugh.

Both Dutch and Canadian forces are currently fighting down south in Kandahar region, where the real action is. Not enough Americans (or Brits) recognize that.

Canada only has about 64,000 in their military, period. Over 2,000 of them are in Afghanistan now -- which might not sound like much, but remember Canada doesn't spend a lot on their military, so they are stretched pretty thin on the ground. (The US has over 2 million in uniform but even we have a hard time keeping 144,000 in Iraq.)

These nations are doing more than their fair share of damage on the Taliban -- as opposed to the French and German forces who sit up north in (much safer) Kabul, and aren't allowed to do much of anything offensive.

Thanks, Canada and the Netherlands!

Your theory is flawed on several levels. First off Canada has troops in Afganistan and Bosnia. In fact it was a Canadian sniper that recorded the longest sniper kill ever and they did it in Afganistan. Second marijauna isn't legal in all of the Netherlands it is only legal in Amsterdam. Third if your implying that neither have been the aggresors in a war because of drug use your still wrong. Canada was part of the British Empire for many years. Canada had one of the most feared militaries in the world backing them up they didn't have to fight anyone. Also the Dutch had several colonies in Africa and they did fight there regularly. It is only recently that these nations have legalized pot, so I really don't think it has anything to do with why they haven't been fighting more.

It hit me the other day that war is a Darwinian selection process. Guys with genes that predispose them toward war get eliminated by wars over time and those genes disappear from the population. Look at Scandanavia. Over 1,000 years ago they were the most fearsome, violent warriors ever--nobody had anything on Scandanavians for warlike abilities. But over time, the gene got eliminated, and now they are the most peaceful and progressive people on earth. So maybe in a few generations the war gene will subside here in America and we will stop trying to force "democracy" (ha-ha, ask Salvador Allende or Mossadegh about America's love for "democracy"!) on everyone. And yes, it is very odd that the drug that causes so much violence, alcohol, is legal, while one that only provokes over eating and going to sleep, is illegal. Go figure. That's "democracy" for you.

hell yea. If marijuana was legal there would be alot less crime becuase the police force would be able to focuse on real crimes our taxes would go down becuase people wouldn't get 5-10 years for weed. Not to change the subject but didn't you ever wonder why getting high is a crime and why us the tax payers have to pay to support people that do this "crime" make congress give up half of there $200,000 pay cheak a year twared a crime that they made a crime.

Marijuana isn't Legal in Canada, that is a huge misconception. Canada and Holland have been involved with wars however both have a foreign policy that utilizes the UN to exhaust diplomatic channels before going into battle.

yes, I'm sure of it :p

Imagine if we grew Tulips, too?

Have you ever heard the saying, that "fighting for peace is like f-ing for chastity"

makes as much sense...

Anyway, I would worry about Bush burning brain cells, don't think he has that many to lose. Still, an even dumber, but peaceful Bush would be preferable to what we have now.

Seriously much as I hate to stay it, since we are in there, I think we need to stay in Iraq since we have destabilized their government , or we could end up with something worse than Saddam. Just get them stabilized as quickly as we can, though, and get out.

I am worried about Bush and his blowhard machismo attitude getting us into a war in Iran or somewhere else.... get him out of office now before he does more damage!

You're either high, or you're just an idiot.

Canada has troops in Bosnia and Afghanistan; they also were a major player in Korea and World War II.

Holland had troops involved in World War II.

Are you THAT MUCH of a stoner, or THAT MUCH of an idiot?

No. It's not about marijuana use. You are thinking about the effect of the use instead of looking at the big picture...why they choose to make it legal. It's their political view system.
