shrove tuesday is the day before the beginning of lent (Christian feast) and is always 47 days before Easter Sunday. Lent is a time of abstinance therefore shrove tuesday was a day to indulge eggs milk and butter were used for pancakes as these were foods given up for lent. Shrove comes from shrive which means to confess. In days gone by christians would attend church in the morning of 'shrive tuesday'.

Many, many years ago when it was the day before Lent started, people gave up fats, lard, eggs and all the good things they cooked with. To get them out of their kitchens they made pancakes the day before lent started . It has carried over to today.
