going through this myself at the moment.
My insurance wasn't very helpful either. They logged the accident but that was it.
I contacted the third party's insurer direct. they should have already contacted themselves, who advised me to get a quote for the repairs and contact them again. I've done that and they're coming to check my car Thursday to see if it's a fair price for the damage. then hopefully my car will be repaired and the garage will fax the invoice to the insurance company
good luck and i hope the damage isn't to bad.

Tell the insurers that you want to make a claim for the damage to the car you were driving. For that van to hit you from behind means he was guilty of driving without due care, so the accident was his fault. It is a pity you did not involve the police. if you did they would have booked him for the offence. Then your insurers would have accepted your claim much easier. Don't take no for an answer from the insurers. They can claim it off the other guys insurance.

there is a legal obiligation for both drivers in an accident to exchange details, if you dont have his details, the police will be able to help you there. then when you have his insurance comapny you write to them saying that their insured man (the van driver) hit you and you are making a claim for the repair of the car, include two estimates from named local garages and in a perfect world they'll write back and say, yes go ahead with the repair we will pay. but be aware some insurance companies just dont bother doing things quickly at all, if that happens either get a solicitor to write them a letter of go to the local courts and ask for the' small claims dept' you tell them what happened anf they give you the right form to fill in, then when that lands on the insurance's desk they'll be 'motivated' all of a sudden and you'll hear from them

Third party only insurance means that the insurance will only pay out for damage or injury to the 3rd party (ie the van) so they won't be interested in your damage!. You need to contact the van drivers insurance co.(if you got his details...?) to claim direct from them....probably need 2 or 3 guesstimates they should help. Hopefully, it has been less than 72hrs since it happened.....?
If you can't get any joy from their insurance co., ask them for a referral to the ABI....Association of British Insurers, they'll investigate for you F.O.C but it takes a while!

If your mate has legal cover your insurer is obliged to contact the third party, they will not deal direct for the repair of your vehicle but should help in the recovery of the outlays on your part.

For personal injury YOU sue the other driver, for damage to car your mate sues. The other driver does all the negotiations with his insurers. Don't let his insurers try and fob you off with less than your due

they are no longer in a position to reject it for that reason. they might deliver somebody to evaluate the wear and tear to work out if the estimate is an outstanding one and would combat it - for £one thousand nonetheless they maximum possibly won't do anymore than purely pay up.
