I was on Accutane when I was in 8th and 9th grade. I am now 23 and the only probems that I can recall having was severe dry skin on my face. I had to carry around some lotion in my bag to take care of that. As a teen, my depression was due to teenage drama and the like. Not from the accutane! I hope this helps! Feel free to email me if needed!

Yes, it is true however my son had huge success with accutane. We were warned of the possible side effects and kept a very close eye on him. We chose to use the medication as his self esteem and subsequent depression were getting (in my opinion) very scary. His acne cleared up in just 6 weeks and thankfully he has not had a flare up in over 24 months! The best advice I can offer is this: As parents we have to be the very best advocate we can possibly be for our children. Keep in very close contact with your pediatrician and dermatologist. DO NOT try to buy this med on-line and use it without a doctors help and NEVER let your child use accutane unsupervised. Even the most trustworthy of kids can be tempted to use too much to get rid of something that is bringing them pain (IE: the emotional pain acne causes) and it is with over use that depression and suicidal tendencies seem to be most prevalent. I wish you luck. Please, talk to your child's pediatrician. My younger daughter also started with bad acne and we decided to go the ProActive route. And while it took a bit longer to clear up her skin, it worked just as wonderfully, was much less expensive and we did not need to worry about the depression and other side effects. You need to do what is best for you and your child, and with a medical doctor's opinion and advice I believe you will get that treatment! Keep the faith...
