I think it is just an evolutionary beneficial reflex. A loud sound could mean something exploding etc and blinking is just a reflex meant to protect your eyes, even if just for a moment. I know that this reflex has protected my eyes on more than one occassion. A good example - think about when someone pops a balloon with a pin. there is a loud noise, and we all blink. When balloons pop like that their fragments can fly out and hit you in the eye. Thats just an example. So yeah, its just a reflex, and we have it because it helps to protect a very important organ (our eyes) from sudden harm.
