This may seem like a dumb question. I know a lot of health professionals say 6-8 or 8-10. I'm 5'3" with a slim build (112 lbs.), and it seems whenever I have more than 4 or 5 glasses of water a day, I feel way too bloated and almost sick from drinking too much.

Some factors to include...I'm 21/female, I live in MA so it's usually cold in the winter. The last 6 days I've exercised 3 times...I'm trying to start doing it every other day. And I eat very little. 1 or 2 small snacks during the day with dinner in the evening, followed by a fruit snack before bed.

Please don't suggest 8 because I can't even make it past 6 a day. I'm not a camel...

There has never been a study to verify the 8 - 10 glasses nonsense. It makes no sense that a 6'2" 225 lb. man should drink the same as a 5'3" 112 lb. woman. The truth is, there is no definitive information as to how much water one should drink each day.

I would guess that as long as you remain hydrated and you're passing urine regularly and comfortably, you're probably good at around 5 glasses (40 ounces) of water per day. You may want to increase your water intake by a glass or so on days you workout. Also, be careful of the cold. Cold and wind can be almost as dehydrating as high heat.

You're right! 8-12 cups of water per day to stay hydrated is the recommendation but remember...its a recommendation.

Factors can influence the amount of water your body requires: Weight (the greater your body weight, the more water you require), Diet (high fiber diets need extra H2O), your level of exercise, and climate.

You can get your daily water needs from drinking AND eating. Certain foods (fruits and vegetables) are high in water content. I can't tell you the exact amount you need. Just give you info to estimate your need.

Don't force yourself to drink 6. You might be getting enough from your diet and since you live in a cold area you won't need as much. If I had to guess you're around 5 a day. Play with it though and maybe start a journal, logging your diet and water intake and write how you feel (bloated, comfortable, thirsty, etc).

Go with how you feel and your best judgment.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck!!!

A general rule is to drink half your weight in ounces. Therefore, you are 112 lbs, you drink 56 ounces a day. More if you are physically active
