why would a monopoly be better?

Monopolies, I suppose, would be fine if prices remained reasonable. But that's the problem with a Monopoly: There is no competition to ensure that prices remain reasonable.

As consumers, we are safer when there is not a monopoly.

You're leaning toward communism with that thought. Who is going to control the monopoly - the government? How do you think that would turn out. Without free enterprise, there will be not initiative to progress with better products and not incentive for workers to be productive. Free enterprise -competition - is the only sure way to assure this.
