According to WHICH Christians? I'm Christian, but I believe the universe is around 14 billion years old.
There are some...shall we say, "MISTAKEN" people out there. I agree with you on this, & I roll my eyes at those people (mostly Orthodox Jews, but some Christians) who insist the universe is 6,000 years old.
Peace be with you!

Don't be distracted by extremists and fire breathing literalism's. God created us in his image and gave us the earth to explore. Science is an extension of this. Seek truth, don't fear it. Jesus said he is the truth, the way and the light. There is much we will never understand, but there is no reason to try not to understand things we can.
The problem is not how the universe was created, or how long it took Rather if you have faith that the creator started the whole process with foreknowledge of the whole process.
God made all of creation very complex, this speaks of a big God with big ideas. The idea of a God that goes "poof" to make humans is actually smaller that the idea of a God that sets and entire universe in motion. This includes the future evolution of intelligent beings that are aware of and have a desire to find their creator.

Your supposition is incorrect.
I am a Christian and I believe in scientific teaching of most things. If you present positive proof of something I'd be a fool to say no.
About the dinosaurs for instance, I saw the bones, I heard the carbon dating age, I believe what they presented.
If you have an infection, you take an anti biotic, that is science, it is fact.
I see no problem in believing in God and believing in science also. It is only the extremists that think differently.

Those christians would be wrong.
And science says the universe is anywhere from 6 to 18 billions years old... quite an exact science I'd say.

You have some things that are not factual as the belief that the Earth is only 10,000 years old. Acutally it is 6000, not 10,000. As for Adam being stopped by God, sure He could have stopped Adam but would that have been letting him exercise free will as God gave him or would it have been more robotic? You stop a robot from exercising the will, not a human that you create with a free will. Having a free will means you have the option of making a decision that will be bad for you but it will be YOUR choice.
In all my study of the Scripture, I have never seen it said that we are not to have knowledge so don't know where you get that one. It is not the knowledge and gaining of it that hurst us but how we use that knowledge. We can use it to glorify God or to glorify ourselves to the point of destruction.
According the the big bang THEORY the Earth was formed when the bang happened so how can the Earth be so much younger than the universe if that is to be believed at all? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Only backward and anti-intellectual Christians refuse to believe what science has revealed to us, and that's a small minority. Unfortunately, they're the ones who make the news, which must be very frustrating to those intelligent Christians who aren't afraid of progress. The head of the Human Genome Project, Dr. Francis Collins, who holds a medical degree as well as a Ph.D. in physics, is an evangelical Christian, and he's trying to convince his fellow evangelicals that science and faith are not mutually exclusive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Collins
As a minister friend, and one of my favorite people on the planet, used to say, "We're Christians, not fools! It is, after all, the truth that we seek."

According to WHAT Christians? Science is a good thing (from God), but like anything else, it can be used and abused.

I have yet to meet any one that didn't believe in ANY scientific teachings.
There are those who, like Thomas Dolby, fear that people can be blinded with science, and are very selective in how they let science influence their lives.

I don't let SOME other Christians...or anyone else...tell me what I can and cannot believe in. My advice is that you take the same position as I and not worry about it.

You know believing in scientific teachings is very different from believing in Evolution.
God could have stopped them, but then what would have happened to Free Will? He warned them....If they had listened to Him, that should have been enough. They still decided to eat from the tree.
