Your parent's job is to train you for adulthood. It was the responsibility they took on when they had to, and any parent who loves their children, wants them to succeed when they grow up, so this job is taken very seriously.
When you don't obey growing up, there are consequences, whether it be by a clip, getting grounded, or whatever other creative means your parents may have to come up with, in order to get you to understand that what you're doing is not acceptable.
If you were an adult, and treated an officer of the law that way, you'd get more than a clip, and if you talked back to a supervisor at work, you'd be fired!
Your parents love you, and are trying to help you to get that habit our of your system by any means possible, so that you have more options as an adult. Not to mention, you probably hurt their feelings. It's hard enough being an adult, but if you go into the world without your parent's guidance and discipline, you're screwed. But if you enter into it with the lessons they have taught you (even if you get a clip for talking back), you'll go with an understanding that they always wanted what was best for you. Even if it makes no sense now.

To teach you some respect for the folk who struggled to bring you and the rest of todays ungrateful little monsters up, if more of todays kids got a good clip round the ear the town centres wouldn't be full of drunken unruly teens every weekend, flashing their all and doling out abuse to every passing stranger while soiling the pavements with their cheap booze and drugs .. bring back public floggings I say! .... for everyone under 25....

Because you are a cheeky so and so. You've let your parents, down, your friends down but most of all, you've let yourself down. Go to your room and don't come down until you've thought long and hard about what you've done.
