there is a story in the bible, am not sure of the verse and that but it goes along the lines that soone made a deal with the devil and that they wouldnt be allowed to eat for forty days. after the forty days were up the devil came to see the man and told him he could only the sew from the fields (flour) the produce of a birth laden mother cow (milk) and the produce of a bird(egg). the ingredients of course which bring you panckaes. shrove tuesday represnts the end of the forty days and the day in which the man was able to eat again but only the concotion of egg flour and milk .
shrove is as in to shrive. this means to be punished for the act of sinnig by makin a deal with the devil he is sinnig and is therefore now being punished

Shrovetide

The last three days before the beginning of Lent is known as Shrovetide. The old names for these days were:

Quinquagesima Sunday - Shrove Sunday
The fiftieth day before Easter
Collop Monday - Shrove Monday
Named after the traditional dish of the day: collops of bacon served with eggs. In addition to providing little meat, the collops were also the source of the fat for the following day's pancakes.
Pancake Day - Shrove Tuesday
The day on which all fats and cream had to be used up.
Shrovetide was celebrated with games, sports, dancing and other revelries. There were feasts to use up the food that could not be eaten during the Lenten fast. Football was played in the streets and Nickanan Night (as Shrove Monday evening was called in Cornwall) was a time for boys to run riot in the villages: hiding gates, taking off door knockers, and making off with anything that householders had forgotten to lock away.

Shrove comes from the word "to shrive" which means to hear confessions.

Pancakes are made because you were to use up all your fat, eggs and dairy before the fasting and abstinence of lent begins.

Carnival is the time from Epiphany (January 6th) through Shrove Tuesday. Carnival comes from the latin "carne vale" meaning farewell to the flesh.

Mardi Gras means "fat Tuesday"

Traditionally one fasts for the 40 days of Lent - the period leading up to Easter - like Jesus did in the desert. This means giving up rich food, so you are supposed to eat up all your eggs and butter etc on the day before Lent begins - so that day became known as 'Pancake Day'. The religious name of Shrove Tuesday comes from an old word 'shrive' - to rid of sin - to make you nice and holy for Lent! In French it is called 'Mardi Gras' = Fat Tuesday - again because you eat all your rich food on that day.

The reason is, it's the last day before the beginning of Lent, when traditionally fasting took place for 40 days. It's pancake day because folk were using up all the rich ingredients they had in their houses before the time of frugality. It was the last binge before the fast! Honestly, that's true!

Not sure I've time for this, but does the term "lent" mean anything to you? I'm sure a good Christian will explain this to you.
