Most of the basic training for these dogs is done by a trainer and then the policeman who will handle the dog will go to the school and work with the dog and the trainers and learn how to work and control the dog.
Then they go home and the poilce man will work the dog in training all the time and work the dog out on the job.
To become a trainer you should have some schooling and will need to work with a trainer as an apprentice and then study and become an accredited trainer.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL2wP
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

i too had asked this question awhile ago when i was searching for a career. you must become a police officer with the k-9 before you can become a trainer all trainers are previous k-9 officers. so start taking criminal justice programs and start with that 4 yrs of college and police academy and a clean record will get ya through. a very rewarding job if you can handle it.

If you are in the UK you have to be in the force for a while first I believe, then after a while you request a transfer to the dog unit.
Any police dog handlers out there, if I am wrong I apologise, but I think this is correct!

No in actual fact there is a training centre in Norfolk that trains poice officers and their dogs. My friend sent her GS there for a months course. Anyone can apparently but it not cheap. I suggest you take courses in animal beviour psycology etc available at college(Otley College does them) in Suffolk. Then you can get qualifications and start your own training centre. If you want to be a police dog handler then you would have to join police force dog dept

You need to become a policeman. Then you need to get accepted in the K-9 unit and learn to handle and train WITH dogs. Only then can you take the next step of learning to train the dogs themselves. Much of the training involves training the handler.

No you don't have to be a police officer. You need years of experience with training and handling not only with obediance but aggressive training. Extensive knowledge about dogs and dog behavior.
