A wild- donkey skin, found at an antiquary store has an inscription that reads more or less: Who possesses me will have whatever he will, but your soul will belong to me. Each wish you make will be fulfilled, but I will shrink, and so will your life.....
And the novel goes in that direction until the skin is very small and the life of his owner heads to its end

shrink like a skin of sadness
hmmm, is this poetic ?
i guess it means, like, shrivel up in sadness....
NB just read gav's link. ignore what i said- looks like a good book!
so i guess in english it would be like, be careful what you wish for.
