Sometimes I get an 'episode' of jagged lights sort of flashing in my line of vision and I can't see right for 20 minutes! Why does this happen and does anyone else get it?

I once told my Optometrist about it and he didn't see a need to worry. It is considered an "eye migraine". I just wonder if others get this and WHY does it happen? My Dr. didn't know much, I might need a new one.

it is a form of a migraine without getting the nasty headache. It is not anything to worry about. If it happens very frequently you get the same treatment as a regular migraine

I had these exact symptoms happen to me over the weekend. Severe headache, floating dark spots, almost appearing like a jelly fish in my vision. Eye was painful and felt abnormal pressure. When I covered my left eye, I could tell my vision was spotty and it also had a fine mist of micro black dots floating thru out my entire vision. In the dark of the room I would see lightening type bolts racing and flashing on my side vision. After promising my Daughter to be seen I left a message on Sunday. Monday morning bright and early I am called to come in now. Diagnosis: Lining on back of eye shrinks and pulls away naturally as we age but for some people areas can still be strongly stuck causing this process to tear your retina away, hence the flashing light and pain. It is a very serious condition as you can have permenant sight loss. I was prepped for laser eye surgery. I thinking holy moly I m scared, this is my eye sight I m messing with here. Today is Tuesdsy post op,happy to report no eye pain headache is so much better. Dr. says floaters will be absorbed over time. As it was the fluid that leaked out from behind the retina. No more flashes. I have a return visit in 2 weeks to make sure all has healed nicely. Dr said very important to catch in the first 48 hours. Moral to this story, never compromise your eye care. Call and get yourself to a professional as soon as possible. Noting to play around with!

Are these episodes accompanied by a headache?
I get the same type episode that you describe and have since I was 12. My doctor told me that something causes the blood vessels in your head to clamp down which causes the vision disturbance, then pain. There is a medication that will reduce the amount of time that the episode lasts. I can't remember the name, though. Sorry.

Lights like that can be a symptom of migraine headaches, but if you don't have migraines you need to see an eye doctor--quick. The health of your eyes isn't something to fool around with.

You need to see the Doctor. This is one of the signs of a retina detachment. Are your eyes very sensitive to light ? A lot of people have floaters but floaters are there all the time.

You need to see a neurologist and get this diagosed. There is no way anyone can have a clue what it might be without tests. See a doc and get this checked out before something serious happens.
