Get off it and leave the Catholics alone. They cannot help what their leaders did 1500 years ago or so or under the banner of a king and certainly not what their priests have done to young children. They are GOOD people...GOOD people...get it. Leave them alone.

Nope, it is not a cult in any way. You will find many people who believe weird theories made up by people who hate religion or Catholics or Jesus. Some people just are ignorant and no one has ever given them a book to read about the truth. The Catholic Church is the largest private charity in the USA and on earth. It is responsible for inventing the hospital and the university. It is the first and original religion of Jesus Christ. All other religions that even acknowledge Jesus to be God has its roots in Catholicism in some way. The upside down cross is something very real and something you can read about. It is called the cross of St. Peter. St. Peter was martyred/murdered for his faith and was to be crucified just like Jesus was. He knew he was not worthy and did not want to be killed in the same manner. He requested to be crucified upside down. That ended up happening. Now you might be able to see where some tidbit of real information could be turned into some idea that Catholics are evil and satan worshippers because they do something weird. It is only weird if the person does not know their history and the rich traditions of the Catholic Church. It sounds like you might be interested in learning more. I would encourage you to go talk to a Priest about any questions you might have or ask one of your Catholic friends or neighbors to take you to Mass with them. There are many things to learn about the Catholic Church. A religion that has been around for two thousand years has a rich sacred tradition of prayers and rites that can be very interesting. Even great Catholics don't always understand every little detail of why we do things a certain way. Don't be afraid, there is nothing about worshipping satan or doing anything creepy or scary.

Roman Catholicism is the largest religion in the world. Over half of all Christians are Catholic. All of Christianity has its roots in Catholicism. If it is a cult (and it may well be) then all religions are cults.

Pastor Billy says: Catholicism is both and more! It is a religion as the original one and only Christian religion. It is a cult as in the Cult of Jesus. The first Hebrews to pronounce their believe in one God were known as the cult of Ya. The word cult in many circles is mis-used and misunderstood. In many cases people use cult and mean occult which is not applicable in this case.

To all the bitter persons posting against Catholicism if you really desire to be a"bible believer" and have a "personal relationship" with Jesus come and accept Jesus One true physical body the Catholic Church. All the claims of godly worship of Mary are lies. All the claims of idol worship are lies. All the claims of rejecting salvation through Jesus are lies. What I find most interesting is those who oppose Catholicism exist only on lies about Catholicism. To quote some famous converts to Catholicism from Protestantism

"Once one becomes a student of history one ceases to be Protestant"
John Henry Cardinal Newman

"If not for all the 'isms' of the world, Protestantism would be empty" (materialism, individualism, nationalism, denominationalism etc etc etc with the exception of Catholicism of course)

GK Chesterton

and one from a catholic

"there are not 100 people who hate the Catholic Church but there are millions who hate what they think it to be"
Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Where as Catholicism stands alone as fullness of Christianity, all those posting opposed to it do not recognize their Protestant Christianity does not exist alone. It only exists as an opposition to Catholicism after all that is how Protestantism got it's beginning. Catholicism is the original Christian response to God, the "personal relationship". Ask yourselves this question how could Protestantism really be that "personal relationship" as there are so many versions of it all disagreeing with each other..Lutheranism, Reformed, Methodist, Episcopalian, SDA, Baptist etc etc etc.

The most crucial problem with the Roman Catholic Church is its belief that faith alone in Christ is not sufficient for salvation. The Bible clearly and consistently states that receiving Jesus Christ as Savior, by grace through faith, grants salvation (John 1:12; 3:16,18,36; Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9-10,13; Ephesians 2:8-9). The Roman Catholic Church rejects this. The official position of the Roman Catholic Church is that a person must believe in Jesus Christ AND be baptized AND receive the Eucharist along with the other sacraments AND obey the decrees of the Roman Catholic Church AND perform meritorious works AND not die with any mortal sins AND etc., etc., etc. Catholic divergence from the Bible on this most crucial of issues, salvation, means that yes, Catholicism is a false religion. If a person believes what the Catholic Church officially teaches, he/she will not be saved. Any claim that works or rituals must be added to faith in order for salvation to be achieved is a claim that Jesus’ death was not sufficient to fully purchase our salvation.
While salvation by faith is the most crucial issue, in comparing Roman Catholicism with the Word of God, there are many other differences and contradictions as well. The Roman Catholic Church teaches many doctrines that are in disagreement with what the Bible declares. These include apostolic succession, worship of saints or Mary, prayer to saints or Mary, the pope / papacy, infant baptism, transubstantiation, plenary indulgences, the sacramental system, and purgatory. While Catholics claim Scriptural support for these concepts, none of these teachings have any solid foundation in the clear teaching of Scripture. These concepts are based on Catholic tradition, not the Word of God. In fact, they all clearly contradict Biblical principles.

It is a religion that traces its roots all the way back to Peter the first appointed leader of the church by Jesus himself.

A cult is a group who's believes are in conflict with basic Christian doctrine. Roman Catholicism follows basic Christian doctrine. Most denominations accept the Apostles Creed as core to their faith. Start there for an outline of core Christian beliefs.

As a catholic I see all religions as a form of cults, as for my catholic beliefs it is the sacraments, not the religion it's self.

There is no charismatic leader [the Pope is not venerated as deific or supernatural] nor is there an attempt to isolate the individual from anyone or any community. It has no secretive teachings that are only available to members of standing; all its teachings are public knowledge and in fact are explicitly spelled out in a book you can buy at practically any bookstore (the Catechism).

Thus, the various definitions of 'cult' are not met.
