Do you wipe them off after mass or leave them on throughout the day? If you leave them on, on average how many people ask you about it or tell you that you have dirt on your head?

You do not 'touch' the blessed ashes. It depends on how many strangers get the opportunity to view you in public. I would say,,on average, 5 people ask about the smudge on my forehead as I go about my day. Before going to bed it is ok to wash your face but before then,,God wants us to keep the ashes on in hopes to provoke conversation with neighbors and strangers as immortality is an important subject,,probably the most relevant in all of christianity,,,ie,,,if you want immortality,,you will uphold the word of God.

When I was Catholic, I'd leave them on as long as possible, even going so far as to forcing myself to sleep on my back. There were times I'd still have them a week later, or at least small traces thereof.

Of course, I was really lucky to have priests who actually tried to make it look like a cross and not just a cross-like smudge.

As a former Catholic, I believe the right thing is to leave them on your forehead all day. I grew up in a Catholic majority community so no one asked about it.

It makes no difference to God if you wipe them off right outside Church and shampoo your hair as soon as you get home. the only ones it may matter to are your silly Church people. Just don't let them know.

You're supposed to leave them on, but most people find a way to "accidentally" get rid of them.
