Hmmm... I wonder if the rest of the Answers community knows the true answer. I'll put this to a vote.

The business reasons behind marriage are very recent. There is evidence of monogamous marriages to at least 4500 BCE. I would say that religious reasons, or maybe even simply love has been around much longer. But to protect the community is most likely the case for early marriages.

God didn’t like the ideal of man being alone so God seek out a partner for Adam (gen 2:18) but none of the animal God made wasn’t suitable for Adam (gen 2:20)so God made Eve out of Adam flesh.(gen 2:21-22) B/c Eve came our of Adam, when ever a man finds a suitable woman they are to leave their home and live together (gen 2:24) which means marriage. So marriage wasn’t created for religious neither property/business reason marriage was made for man it’s a gift that God give man. That’s the truth now you can ask why do people get marry? for religious reason or business.

None of the above.

Marriage has existed in all known societies throughout the world throughout history.

Whether primitive man, tribal, or other - they all came to marriage as a stable way of bringing up and caring for their families.

Many religions adopted the idea but the basic idea of marriage sprang from man well before religions came about.

Christianity in particular always tries to hijack love and marriage and suggest that without Christianity it would not exist. They simply cannot condone that there can be anything good in people who are not Christians. How sad for them.

Take heart - humans are intrinsically good and practically all the good ideas and emotions have sprung entirely from the nature of the human being.

Depends on how you define religious. Marriage WAS at one point the ultimate, spiritual union (before religon became the religion we know of today). Male and Female are two opposites so when they come together they form the perfect union. In the old days of the infancy of civilization this was seen as achieving transcendance, acheiving perfection. That is why alot of temples had prostitutes and you hear about the sacred feminine, the only way for man to reach "God" is through woman.

This is much cooler than the bullshit we have today.

religious i guess. God created marriage so a man and a woman to become 1. when u marry some 1 tht is the person u r supposed to spend the rest of ur life.

the reason i didnt say any thing about same sex marriage is because i was talking about the bible. if ur gay and married to ur partner im happy for u.

God created the union of marriage because he knew that the humans he created would have a natural need for male and female relationship!

The latter. The church didn't even get involved in civil marriage for hundreds of years.

EDIT

This is a fact, people. For hundreds of years, there wasn't even a religious marriage service. The couple got married by the civil authorities, then went to the bishop and told him, and received communion together.

property/business reasons.
you can perform marriages via a civil authority, but I doubt there's any place in the world where property rights aren't a part of the marriage.

Buisness reasons, marriage was a tradition dating back to the Egyptians, but it had nothing to do with religion.
