Do I get a temporary policy and then negotiate a more permanent policy after buying the car? Do I have to get the regular policy from the same place I get the temporary one from?

Call the insurance first and ask them how much it will cost you first. If you are okay with the quote, and know definitely that you are going to buy a car ASAP, go ahead and get the insurance first. Why not, you will have to do it anyway right after you buy the car. You also never know, what will happen once your drive that car off the lot, and you get into an accident. Trust me, I know, I hit a person who just purchased thier car and just a day next day I toasted thier brand new car.

You should get the insurance before you take delivery of the car. I would call around cause different ins. companies charge different rates. I get a decent rate from AIG. They are a good company that pays on claims and no hassle. Some companies sell ins. by the month at a higher price. I don't recommend them.

when I went thru this, my agent said that he would execute a policy after I purchased the vehicle and would back date it to the date that I bought it. Just so long as he knew he was good with it.

I don't know what you would do if you don't have an agent right now tho.
