The language spoken in Slovenia is Slovenian (Slovene) which is a South Slavic language..
You won't have a problem getting by in English... because Slovenes are very good at languages!!
Many young people especially speak very good English.
Alot of people can also speak German (esp in the north) and Italian (esp in the south).
Slovenians will be very happy if you attempt to speak Slovenian because not many people speak it.

1) Tamara has given you the correct translations..I will just add a few more for you.

YES/ NO = DA/ NE

PLEASE =PROSIM

PARDON / EXCUSE ME = OPROSITE/ PARDON

GOOD MORNING = DOBRO JUTRO
GOOD DAY = DOBER DAN
GOOD EVENING = DOBER VECER
GOOD NIGHT = LAHKO NOC

GOOD BYE = NA SVIDENJE / ZBOGOM / ADIJO

DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH? = GOVORITE ANGLESKO? (informal govoris anglesko?)

WHAT TIME IS IT = KOLIKO JE URE

HOW MUCH (ie what is the cost)? = KOLIKO STANE?

WHERE IS (the toilet) = KJE JE (stranišče)

HELP! = POMOC!

MY NAME IS = JAZ SEM.... (literally I'm ...)

WHERE ARE YOU FROM = OD KOD STE (informal od kod si)
I'M FROM (america, england, canada) = JAZ SEM IZ (Amerike, Engleske, kanade)

I LOVE YOU = LJUBIM TE

### In Slovenian = the letter J is pronounces like the English letter Y ####
### You are very pretty / handsome if complementing a man would be 'zelo lep si' - Slovenian language has genders! #####

I think that is enough!! If you need more this is a free online phrase book. IT HAS AUDIOFILE so you can listen how every thing is pronounced

2)However I would just like to add a comment..
I only answered this question (because Tamara's answer is good) but I'm confused as to why she added the Serbian phrases for you because whilst they are quite similar languages and many Slovenes do know Serbian / Croatian. The languages do have many differences which can cause confusion. The older generation do know Serbian because of Yugoslavia..but the younger generation (under 20) won't.
It is OK to use Serbian if you can speak it. I use Serbian for day to day things..and everybody understands me. Though they mostly reply in Slovenian. However I have friends who only know a little Serbian..and when they try to use it..people always tell them to speak English instead.
Slovenians really don't like tourists trying to communicate in basic Serbian . They would much prefer that you just use English. Amongst Ex-Yugs it's OK..but only because of communication..

Depending on which sources you use, and theories you subscribe to, you will find many answers to this question. I happen to agree with Erik and disagree with aus_melb. There is definitive proof that there was a proto-European language, maybe not spoken by and not exclusively - all as this would be hard to prove - but a language whose grammar, sentence structure and etymology might have influenced latter languages, especially on the European continent, and most say it is Sanskrit. It is hard to say exactly what was the most prevalent language around 5000 b.c., as that would, of course, depend on how many people there were and which percentages spoke what. Of course, there was no census.... So, maybe proto-Canaanite, maybe Akkadian. The proto-European language Erik speaks of would predate 5000 BC.
