It depends on what you are doing at the gym.
If you are doing cardio then, no.
If you are lifting weights in order to bulk up, absolutely. Eating fast burning carbs like pasta is the best theing you can eat an hour before a weight workout. Immediately after the workout, have a small baked potato, and then 10 minutes later consume at least 40 grams of protein. This wil spike your insulin levels and make your body digest the protein easier, thereby repairing your muscles fatser.

eating things like pasta, white bread, bagels, or other medium to high GI foods 1hr before the gym is very beneficial to your training.
you should also aim to eat high GI foods directly after your training. (potatoes, cooked carrots, and others like this) you can also get special drinks which apparently cover your needs after training. It really doesn't matter if you are lifting weights or doing aerobic training you need to help your body prepare and fuel for the exercise and recover from the exertion by refuelling after.

Eat something light like a salad with maybe a little bit of pasta if it is a must. You want to be able to do what you want to without feeling nauseas of heavy.

I depends what you have it with, on its own or with veg it will burn off fast so thats fine, but if you mix it with meat, meat take a longer time to digest so thats not recommended.
But on the other hand, when I ate salad for lunch and went running 5 hours later, I could still feel it and taste it........some things take longer to digest than others.......but I know for sure pasta burns off fast.

you do need to eat before going to the gym, but 1.5 to 2 hours before you start your routine is best.
pasta is actually a pretty good choice as it will give you lots of energy.

Absolutely not. You need time to digest the food.Better at least three hours before. If not, your muscle will work and your food won't be digested because of this. You won't digest till later.Very bad for your health. If you need it is a lot better a couple of spoons of sugar, that will give you the energy that you need but it doesn't need to be digested,so it is ready to use

no u can't have anything 2 hrs before your work out or there is a risk of it coming back out and besides having food in your belly shortly before u train would slow you down. if you are really hungry, have a small banana or another piece of fruit
