were animals? Those religious people knew that treating a person like an animal was immoral so they had to make themselves believe that the African American were not human so they can treat them as slaves even though many of those considered themselves christians? Oh this was researched in a multicultural law enforcement book.

Daisy,
I have no doubt that you are correct. There are those today whether they are Christians or not that would revert back to those times and begin again if they could. There are people all over this world that are mistreated as a result of racial discrimination. You can tout that you are a Christian, Muslim, or Jew but if you are not following the beliefs of that faith then I would say that you are not and do not have any membership in that group of people. I was told several days ago that all a person had to do to "be a Christian" was to "say they were a Christian". This is NOT what I read in the New Testament scriptures. In fact the book of Acts has a number of examples of Baptism to become Christians in it.

To become a real Christian, we are told that we must HEAR the WORD in John 6:45, Jesus said, “It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.” We are also told so in Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. We are told the we must BELIEVE in Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. We are also told so in Mark 16:16, Jesus said “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” and in John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. We are told that we must REPENT (or turn from sin) in Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Also in Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent. We are told to CONFESS CHRIST in Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. We are also told in 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. We are to be BAPTIZED according to Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” and Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. We are to CONTINUE to be FAITHFUL UNTIL DEATH according to Revelation 2:10c Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. We also know that Paul wrote in Romans 14:12 each of us shall give account of himself to God. It is important that we not ignore what is written, change what is written, or add to what is written in the New Testament which is our Christian Guide. Have a great day!

And so what was then, was then. Romans threw Christians to the lions. Men have been made into slaves of all races at one time another. And if we were not a Christian nation, blacks would still be slaves. There were thousands of white Christians that worked to end slavery all throughout the history of the US. Also many of the Christians that accepted slavery thought that the blacks were better off as slaves then being in Africa. And remember there were Africans that sold there own people into slavery, in fact, most slaves were delivered to slave ships by black slave dealers.

And if all the above is true, so what?, we can not change history.

Slavery pre-dates Christianity by several thousand years. Jesus never addressed the issue as being right or wrong, it was just a fact of human existence. There were many justifications for slavery used by Christians and non-Christians but none of them squared with one of the founding ideals of America, which was that all men were created equal.
And the abolitionist movement in both England and America were results of a great Christian revival. In England, it was called the 'Great Awakening'. In the Union states, many congregationalist preachers taught that slavery was wrong.
I don't know the book you are referring to, but it is incorrect in saying that Christians believed that Africans were sub-human and could consequently be mistreated.

I am pretty sure the book was focusing on the bad part of it all.. some so-called christians might have been this way - which proves they were never christians to begin with, I don't think its fair to bunch all of them together - I am sure there were some real christians that didn't agree with slavery and didn't treat slaves like animals. Look at Abraham Lincoln, he was a Christian.

Acts 8:27 NKJV So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship. The queen of ethiopia was a convert. They already knew about Christianity long before they were shipped over here.

The Apostle Paul told the Christians of his day that they needed to remember that they had a master in Heaven and needed to treat their servants or slaves in a way that God would approve..He strongly suggested that Philemon give Onesimus (Philemon's runaway slave) that he forgive him and set him free.

True Christians follow that example. Many people do things in the name of Jesus Christ which He would have never approved of.

They were lazy and wanted to soothe their consciences, so they came up with a rationalization so they could keep slaves.

The IMPORTANT question will always be...

NOT what do you call yourself
BUT what does your life PROVE about yourself.
