How do I go about this? I know the CIC website so dont bother answering if that's your response. I understand that US citizens and green card holders can apply at the boarder upon entry. Can we also visit Canada, search for a job while there then apply for a work permit from within canada? if so how long does it take?

Generally speaking, you can apply for a visitors permit at ports of entry, but for immigration status, such as work permits, permanent residency, etc. this must be done ahead of time, while living outside of Canada.

You can though, visit Canada and look for work while you are here, but I wouldn't tell the border guards that was what you were doing.

To get the absolute truth on the matter though, I would contact by phone Canada Immigration to ask.

Yeah you can visit canada for up to 180 days before needing to leave. In that time you could look for work then apply for the work visa after.
