Volkswagens, especially Beetles are AMAZING cars! I had a 2001 VW Beetle, Loved it! It was a great car, never any problems and i drove the hell out of it. in just 8months I put 25k miles on it. Most people dont put that many miles on a car in a year.... I sold my 01 and got a 2007 volkswagen New Beetle Convertible, I LOVE it just as much! for as long as I am driving, I will continue to buy volkswagens and ONLY volkswagens!
(electrical problems were on the 98-01 models, no worries with your 02!
Enjoy your bug!! :)
You'll LOVE it!

I have an 02 jetta and I had a few problems with it that the dealer fixed when it was under warranty. I know of a few problems that the jettas have, but i haven't heard of many problems from the beetles. They are cute cars and I love the VW brand. If it would make you feel more comfortable, see about an extended warranty. One piece of advice, for work on your beetle, don't go to the dealership. They are called "stealerships" for a reason. Their parts and labor are super expensive. Enjoy your beetle, they are such cute cars!!

By the way, 2002 VW's are not air cooled. Disregard that bit of advice. Park over puddles all you want.
VW's are notrious for lasting 40,000 miles and then they start falling to bits. My friend had an 02 bug and owned it from new. The electrics failed, the transmission went out and the windows stopped working. I wouldn't buy a bug but maybe you'll luck out and get a decent one. (Also had a friend with an 03 jetta and the AC compressor died at 36,115 miles. Just out of warranty)

I have had mine since '02, and still love the little thing. Haven't had any major things go wrong at all.
Had something (padding??) fall inside the passenger door, where the window wouldn't raise all the way up, but it was repaired, and all is fine.
The electrical problems were reported on earlier models, and I haven't had any probs.
Visit msn cars, and read up on the consumer reviews.

Once stuff starts breaking on a VW it doesn't stop get a honda civic or chevy cavileir ,or if you like interior room get a ford focus but then you have the same problem as the VW except the VW starts breaking around 170K and the ford starts breaking around 0K

It is a volkswagen so you are going to be paying thru the nose for parts if you go to the dealer. Find another source.

These cars are iconic you lucky thing, the only suggestion I have is do not park a hot car over a puddle as they are air cooled and it sucks up the moisture which can cause starting problems. Apart from that they are great.
