That sentence means that while certain wild life and plants (variations) can be lost, by exposure to certain elements and changes in environment. Those changes could actually increase the quality of conditions for OTHER TYPES of wild life and plant variations to prosper and grow.

Example, High nitrates from manures on farmlands can kill off certain plants, while actually creating a better environment for OTHER types of plants to grow. Therefore, the flora and fauna of the region can change vastly, by changing the elements in the soils, in which they grow.

As for the changes in wild life, chemicals and nitrates can kill off small creatures like frogs, crickets, etc., which is also part of the food chain for larger animals. Therefore those animals move on to other terrains, or will die out due to the depths of these changes

Well, if a car park is constructed on a place that used to be a forest, animal and plant diversity will be lost while there will be more diversity of cars.

But what they mean is probably what the first poster said.. :-)

Michelles answer (4th poster) is also correct I suppose, but it is not what the sentence says: Wild life and (wild?) plant diversity is opposed to "other" types of diversity, so that excludes wild life (and plant) diversity. I agree with the 3d poster that it awful use of language.

Diversity mean how many different types of animals and plants.
So it means ... fewer types of wild animals and plants, and more types of tame animals and plants.

This sounds like university prof lingo gone amok. Maybe there is some sense in there somewhere, but I am a proponent of simple English, and this fails me. If the author is making a statement, he should say it in language that everyone can understand!

In essence it means that plant and animals will thrive according to their ability to adapt. Those plants and animals that cannot adapt to the change in conditions, will die off. Whereas those plants and animals with the ability to adapt will thrive.
