As a former cab driver, let me tell you that they absolutely depend on the tips you give them. In most places, they're paid a very meager salary by the cab company, and they only get a small portion of what the meter says.

It's customary to tip 15% of your cab fare to the driver if you feel your ride was safe and your driver was courteous. It's also customary to add an additional $1 per bag if he/she loads and unloads your bags for you.

My dad's a cab driver. He says he doesn't expect a tip unless he's done something extra-hard or awkward ... but it's always nice to get one!

Yes I do, I never go for long - so I usually round up to the closest bill. Ex. if it is $16.23, I'll give them a $20. If the total comes to less than a dollar to the closest bill, I will usually add $2-$3 on to it.
