Want to go to school to become an RN. Heard that their are Grants available from the Fed. Gov't to help with school costs. But everyone I talk with says Grants are a farce. Really need to find a way to get some help. Financial Aide is a joke. Need some free money if there is such a thing.

I know the commercials seem to make it easier than it says on finding free money to attend college, but there is money out there. There is a lot of scholarships and some student loan forgiveness programs out there for individuals interested in studying nursing. Some of it comes from well known medical and pharmaceutical industry sources. This is because there is a nursing shortage in this country. I will provide some free sources to locate money to attend college.

First, a high school senior can locate local scholarships at the high school guidance office.

Second, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.

Third, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Fourth, some individual states have programs to assist nursing students find money for college, so it becomes an idea to search Google.com and Yahoo.com.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Good luck!

I get a Pell grant every year, and there are MANY scholarship and grant programs available for nursing students.

My suggestion? Fill out your FAFSA for this school year, add the schools that you are intersted in, and go talk to them about their nursing program. Your FAFSA is the only way you can apply for federal financial aid, including grants.
