the points are just for bragging rights, and to give everyone else an idea how helpful you've been. look at different peoples profiles you will see how long they have been here, and how many answers they have given and which percentage are best answers.
and most important of all, you get to help people, with pearls of your wisdom. REMEMBER TO ENJOY YOURSELF

It's the same as how we teach the children nowadays.There is no prize and sooner or later you realize that you are working for nothing because all of the other kids, even the ones that suck at it,
will get the same reward.

It flatters some people's egos to know that they're on a higher level than others. In reality it means nothing and adds nothing to the board.

as a level one you can only answer so many questions
as you build your points you have more entitlements
there is also a best answerer board etc
really just to encourage people to answer more questions
