Read the following which I found in an XP book. I'm sure Vista has done this and added additional security:
Install Problems – What Windows Does –Install on Another Computer – Product Key – 25-character code
When you buy Windows XP in a shrink-wrapped box, you are allowed to install one copy on one PC. When Windows comes pre-installed on a new PC, it stays with the PC. You cannot transfer it from the bundled machine to a different machine. MS uses a technique called “BIOS locking” to make sure the copy stays ties to that specific PC forever.
Windows installer makes you type the 25-character code that’s printed on the case. The Product Activation program looks at various serial numbers inside your PC – the processor, network card, disk drives, etc. – mixes them together, and produces a second 25 character code that identifies your PC. These 50 characters, together, are called the Installation ID.
When you activate XP, you give MS the 50-character Installaton ID. If nobody else activated that 25-character code or if it has been activated with that specific Installation ID (which means you activated this particular copy of XP from the same PC twice) MS send back a 42-character Confirmation ID. The Installation ID and the Confirmation ID are stored on our PC.
If that 25-character code has been already been used on a different PC you will be notified that the number of times you can activate Windows with this product key has been exceeded.

They removed all the promised "Killer features" like the Relational File system and produced nothing more than a version of XP with more confirmation dialogs and a theme designed to make it look like Mac OS X. All of the visual eye candy was lifted from Apple with little to no modification.
Microsoft still lists XP as being supported for another five years. Hold off on Vista.
It will require significant hardware upgrades to take advantage of all the boated perdy eye candy, so you might as well wait until you buy a new PC that comes with Vista.
There is no reason to upgrade an existing PC to Vista, unless you have some sad, pathetic need to prove your manliness by showing off your 133t hax0r warez Vista install.
As a side note, you can pirate vista, but doing so prevents you from installing security patches and updates. The end result is your Vista install will, after a few months, be less secure than an XP install that's been kept up to date.

All Microsoft Software is copyable, it all depends on how secure you want to be, MS are THE desktop operating system provider, and as such get disproportionately large amounts of hack attempts, therefore the software has to constantly evolve to counter this threat, if you have a non legal copy of the software, you will not be able to get these, you may find in the first instance you can, but all that happens is MS will turn of the rogue license keys and you machine will be left vulnerable, and... you will not be able to install any new utilities from MS, they will block it. MY best advice is stick with XP until you can buy a copy of Vista, it will save you a load of grief in the long run, because if you do install a ripped version, it will need overwriting in the future which could entail a full re-install.
hope this helps

You can do it, but it won't help you. Because of pirates like you, MS makes all of us suffer through their anti-piracy measures, which are quite annoying. Each copy of Vista has a unique serial number. When you install it, you have to connect to their server and enter the serial number to authenticate. If the serial number you enter doesn't match the disc, or if the serial number has already been activated on another computer, your copy won't activate. It will go into reduced functionality mode, where it deletes your desktop shortcuts and start menu, and won't do anything but use IE to connect to the MS site where you can purchase a legal copy. It will shut your computer down after one hour.
There are some hacked serial numbers out there, but MS is blocking them from activation as soon as they catch them. Plus a recent check showed that about 75% of the cracked serial numbers are actually Trojans, many of them either erase your hard drive or encrypt it and hold your data for ransom (which is what you deserve).
Sorry. You're stuck paying for it like the rest of us. Oh, and BTW, Bill Gates isn't the one you're stealing from. You're stealing from the developers, the graphic artists, the writers, even the janitors. You're stealing from Microsoft employees who aren't rich. Don't try to justify your criminal acts by saying it's because Bill Gates is rich. Besides, at least he's giving his money to charity.

The Enterprise edition of Vista now requires an activation server be installed on the domain...
The other editions of Vista will activate online pretty much the same way XP did.
There are cracks available online, but something like 75% of them are reported trojans and the remaining 25% simply change the activation time from 30 days to anywhere from 6 months to 20 years.

Well, I have seen cases of piracy with Vista too, so its not completely piracy-free as such...
They have this really cheap version of Vista out for 1000 rupees among the many that they've released (yeah, there are quite a few versions of it!)
Multi-user license is obviously there for organizations.
