I have observed that some birds eg the sparrow and White Crested Laughing Thrush (http://www.klein.com/dvk/photos/birds/white_crested_laughing_thrush.jpg) move around on the ground by hopping on two legs, while others, like most crows, doves, mynahs and chickens, walk. Why is this so?

I think it has to do with size. Sparrows are much smaller than crows and hawks, so they hop. Why? Because it probably requires less work than walking. Their leg muscles arent as strong as other birds who use their talons for grabbing and holding something.

It depends on the length of the legs. Some birds have long legs and others are quite short. Hopping itself is a defensive maneuver...it allows the bird to cover a lot of ground fast. I have seen crows hop to get out of the way of passing cars...then when the danger is gone they walk again.
