For example, in certain species of shark, the unborn baby sharks eat each other until there is only one left to be born, and with Coot ducks, the parents pick on one or more of the ducklings until it stops asking for food and dies. Surely this cannot be blamed on man's influence on the world?

Indirectly, it can. To make a long story short, Satan rules this world, not God (at least not directly) since humanity gave our allegiance to him by default when we first sinned. Nature is cruel because its master (the devil) is cruel.

C.S. Lewis wrote some essays dealing directly with this subject. If you are interested, try reading "The Problem of Pain" sometime. It is a thin paperback, and a fairly easy read.

If there is a god, you could not expect control of everything to be the responsibility of that god. What would be the point of being alive if all your thinking and actions were to be the due to the result of a higher beings will.

If there is god perfection made by such a being is the random and naturalistic world in which we live plentiful in resources and diversity. The society and social problems, management of supply and demand, administration of the population is down to the species including if not especially the human race.

I'm sorry to say that it is man's doing really in regards to what is happening to nature. It has been like that ever since Adam disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden. This is what God said to Adam after he sinned, "And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life." (Genesis 3:17) previous to that God told Adam not to eat off three of the knowledge of good and evil, for if he eats it HE SHALL SURELY DIE.(Genesis 2:16-17) and what happened...Adam and his wife transgressed against God, and the earth was cursed. That is why nature is cruel. God never want the planet to be this way. Not only did Adam's sin affect the earth it affected man's relationship with God. Which is why Jesus came to this earth and to restore. He did that successfully at His expense by dying on a cross and to remove the barrier of sin so that we can come to God. So the next thing that God is going to do is restore the earth to it's glorious state, which will soon take place in the near future.

Because all three religions based on God (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) are very anthropocentric, meaning they focus on humans. With regard to animals, in Genesis, God gave man the power to name the animals. This privilege, I think, puts man above all the other animals. I think in the Christian view, the emotions of animals aren't considered at all. Animals serve as food and exploitation by humans. It's sad I know.
