I dont know the technical definition, but a torrent is a huge file that is downloaded in little random sections at a time from different users. The more users that are sharing the torrent (peers), the faster the download will be. Im not sure if limewire uses torrents for the small files like mp3's and video clips, but torrents are mostly used for whole movies, software, stuff like that. And they take a hell of a lot longer than limewire!!

Most downloads are from the internet. Torrents, Limewire, Shareaza and other Peer to Peer file programs send files directly between computers. Uploading files (keeping the file going after the download is finished) allows other people to connect to you and download.

Torrents and Limewire are only different in the fact that you need to search a webpage to find torrents, whereas Limewire links are on a network (automatically connected to).

Laymans terms:

Torrent is a small index file that holds information on a potential download.
To download the file you open the Torrent file within a program which can read them, it then has the relevant information to connect to other users wnating to download the file (Peers) and from users who already hold the file (Seeds).
The main difference from Limewire is the use of the Torrent file itself.

A torrent file is an Algorithm that points to hosts for the file that your looking to download. p2p works same way prtty much, except there is no algorithm for hosts and its blatant to who you are getting the info from. That is why you can get more things from torrents and tahts why its harder for actual torrents (not torrent browsing software) to be shut down. Its sorta encrypting the hosts so that there addresses are not blatant..

torrents are links to files available to download, similar to p2p. you search for torrents using one of many search engines, you can use google, and you use a torrent client to download the links. I recommend bitcomet for first time use as it has an integrated search feature.
