The bags and weight that you carry on an airplane is limited by the airline, usually 50 to 60 lbs. The weight is NOT determined by the size of the aircraft. All aircraft are limited to a gross takeoff weight that is carefully calculated. The 747 has one of the safest flying records of all commercial aircraft, so yes it is OK.

maximum takeoff weight is calculated for every aircraft before every single takeoff and depends on such things as temperature, airport elevation, runway length, runway contamination (snow/ice etc) precipitationo, required climb gradients, enroute altitude, terrain clearance, and many many other things.

Before each takeoff, the pilots determine that the aircraft itself does not exceed the maximum calculated takeoff value for that particular takeoff.
