I am thinking of going to do a ski season in New Zealand, I wanted to know how difficult it is to get a job out there? SOmething like a nightclub bar man or similar? Also does anyone have any recommendations of how to go about it, where to go, and what time is best to get out there for? Thanks!

I used to live in NZ, am a ski addict and skied all the main resorts, so fairly qualified to answer your question!

In terms of places to go, I would recommend Wanaka or Queenstown. My fave would be Wanaka, slightly smaller town than Queenstown 1 and a half hours drive away, really nice and totally beautiful on the edge of huge lake (like Queenstown really, but prettier and less annoyingly touristy). Wanaka's closest skifields are Treble Cone (awesome if you're a good skier/boarder) and Cardrona (great if you're beginner/early intermediate). Wanaka has some laid-back bars and some nice hotels where you could waiter/bar manage.

If you want nightlife and somewhere lively, Queenstown would be better. Closest skiefields The Remarkables (for advanced) and Coronet Peak (good for beginners/intermediates). All these skifields are about 20 mins by coach from either Wanaka or Queenstown, but coaches are cheap.

Season starts June/July until late Sept/early Oct if you're lucky. Safest snow is late July to early Sept. Seasons vary, 2 years ago was rubbish, but 3 years ago was great and we even had some summer ski-ing in t-shirts in December.

There are lots of other skifields, some near Christchurch and Ruapehu in the North Island, but Wanaka/Queenstown are the biggest areas and where you'll most likely get a job.

Good luck and have an awesome time!

You would be best off heading to Queenstown because the other ski resorts have almost nothing in the way of nightlife.
However, Queenstown is a very popular place all year round, and the NZ government give out almost unlimited numbers of working holiday visas these days, so there are always hundreds of backpackers looking for jobs. So you will have lots of competition!

www.seek.co.nz is by far the largest job website in NZ and lists just about every job going, so have a look there.

Hi there!
May I suggest that you try out a website that I have listed below, as it is full of very good details on the areas in New Zealand along with Accommodation, Jobs and how to get them. It will, on the sub-menus give all the information you are likely to need for the things you are asking about.

Good luck and have a great time if you do decide to go!
