Wear latex gloves when you cut them if it's a real problem. I usually wash right before, right after, and sometimes during the cutting (like between halves for big ones). I've heard lemon juice can reduce onion stank, but I havn't trusted that enough to try it yet. I don't necessarily want lemon flavor in the dish the onion will go into.

So far, you have sage advice. Refrigerate your onion several hours before cutting or place in bowl of ice for about 1/2 hour before cutting to slow the "milk" of the onion, that's what causes the oder, and it will keep the smell in the house down as well.

Where gloves before/during cutting. Or if you dont have gloves, immeditately wash your hands with a strong soap like tide or era. Ive heard that also rubbing your hands on a spoon helps take away the smell, but ive never tried it.

Try some orange juice (from actual oranges, not from a carton). The citrus will help cut the onion smell off.

This works for onion, garlic, and fish odors.
Using a stainless steel spoon, or a stainless steel 'bar' that looks like a bar of soap (most good kitchen supply stores carry them), rub the spoon between your fingers, as if you were washing them with the spoon, under cold running water.
No soap. Just cold water and stainless steel.

Do you have some White Vinegar, pour a little in your hands and let them air dry, the smell will leave.

I squirt lemon juice on my hand after eating crab legs. The acidity helps the smell tremendously and that's for fish!!

You can also use salt with the lemon juice or with soap alone. Just pour some salt into your wet hands and scrub them as if you are washing them. Works every time.
