Would they only draft men? Would there be a draft lottery? Would it be like in the 70s, where as long as you were a full-time college student, you werent drafted?! What happens if you leave the country when you drafted, are you forbidden from coming back?!

Im a 19 yr. old girl in college, and I really wouldnt wanna go if there was a draft

Fmale can't be drafted because they can't sign up for the selceted service.

A male can still be drefted if he was in college if the need was great like if america was ever invade all able bodied men would drafted.

here are some things that decrease your chances.

Being an only child
Being married
Full time college
Having a job that is important, like a doctor
Already in the military

It would probably be similar to the last draft- a lottery among eligible people without better things to do with their lives.

Good-grade, full-time college students would definitely not be drafted. They generally drafted males first(in fact, only males had to register for it), though that may not be true in a time where we genuinely have equal rights. They drafted 18 year-olds, not people who have started their education.

You would definitely not be forbidden from coming back, at least after your years of service ended. If you were still in service, you may still come back, but if you come without permission, I guess you could be court-martialed.

I seriously doubt that there will be a draft.

They don't draft women anyways, only men have to register for the Selective Service System. They only draft 18-25 year olds
Excluded are:
* Men who are actively serving in the military
* Men who are attending a military service academy or select university military officer procurement program
* Foreign citizens in the United States on valid student, visitor or diplomatic visas
* Certain foreign agricultural workers
* Men who are confined to a hospital or psychiatric institution
* Handicapped men who cannot function in public
* Inmates .

Also conscientious objector status can be obtained if you belong to a certain religious group or you have been a long term critic of war in general. The key there is long term, if you just decided to start hating war when you got your draft notice you're not including as a conscientious objector. Homosexuals also used to be exempt from being drafted but I'm not sure if this still applies.

I wouldn't worry too much about a draft at the moment...
But... it is unlikely that if there is one again someday, that college would be an exception, too many can go to college now. There were no grant and loan programs during that time, and that particular exclusion was to protect the rich's children.

As far as women being drafted... I would guess that if our country is ever in enough trouble that they reinstate the draft, it is highly likely that women will be needed also.

Actually that is why the vietnam war ended because they drafted college students. Rich White Kids parents started to complain. I would say any physical handicap would exempt you. Isn't that messed up ? because many people come back from wars handicapped ! If you leave the country when drafted, technically they can execute you in time of war, but they usually never do and they will probably just throw you n jail and you'll pay a fine

At the moment, the draft is only geared up to send males. That could change. It depends on how they write the laws when it would be reinstated (if it ever does).

I doubt a draft will ever happen (at least under today's circumstances). First of all, it would be political suicide for lawmakers to reinstate the draft. Second of all, it is bad for the country. It makes everybody unhappy, it drains the economy, and it makes for a lousy military.

If it is necessary to have a draft, I would want absolutely no deferments!
If fact, family members of ANY elected official would be the first called up! The we will see if our elected officials are serious about the draft or only want to give it lip service.
No one - except some strange individuals - wants to be shot at.
That is why, if there is a draft, everyone should be eligible. i.e. retired persons could fill clerical tasks therefore freeing up able bodied military person. At my age I can keep up with a 20-year old for perhaps 15 feet and then fall flat on my face!

I believe the best way to find the answers you want would be to contact a recruiter and ask him or her.

From what I know however, females are not drafted. IF they have a draft (I doubt they will) and a person is drafted and runs away they become a criminal and if they return to this country they can and should be prosecuted.

I seriously doubt you have anything to worry about.

Hope this helps...

If you are in college, dont worry about it. America wont be stupid enough to send it's intellectuals off to war. Also if you are mentally or physicaly disabled, under 18 or over 45 or have dependents, you probably wont go be sent. The one thing that you can't do is buy yourself out of the draft like you could in the civil war.

You don't have to worry about getting drafted but a great way to avoid the draft.... is to go to jail. So just do something stupid and get a few months in jail....
