My momma dog was low on calcium due to poor food quality from her breeder while she was preganant. When I got her three weeks ago, she was already far into her pregnancy. Yesterday she gave birth and that's how we found out she was low on calcium and I need help finding foods to help her build up calcium for her growing brood. Thank you.

I like to use a liquid calcium with magnesium for dams in whelp and for dams nursing. Dogs can develop something called an eclampsia, from low calcium in the blood. Should that happen, which can happen while puppies are nursing, the dam will start shaking uncontrollable and it will be an emergency. She will have to be raced to a vet for intravenous calcium. So I supplement as a precaution. Not everyone believes in doing that, but I do. I have raised dogs since 1965. One more thing, you should not feel that the previous owner was at fault, it is not easy to know how much calcium a dog needs, just as people get deficient in minerals and vitamins so do dogs. Dogs also have many more mouths to feed and between delivering and nursing low calcium levels are extremely common.

You need to get Pet-cal. It is a calcium supplement in chewable pill form. Most Vets have it. It is an over the counter vitamin so you don't need to see the Vet. Use as directed.
