I know you perform one by pressing F5 during setup... but I cant, for the life of me, work out what a HAL selection actually is as all the answers I find through Gooooogle explain this thing at far too high a level!!

Please help if possible, thanks!

HAL- Hardware Abstraction Layer. Its how your hardware works with the Operating System. When setting up Windows you should always let Windows Select the HAL for you. There is 2 major types of HAL's, ACPI and non-ACPI compliant HAL's. This is what controls the power interface for devices and when you start messing aroudn and pick the wrong HAL your goibng to have power issues with your machine. Only time you should pick another HAL is if you know you are going to ge ta new motherboard which supports ACPI and atm you only have a non-acpi bios, or if Windows does not recognize the ACPI for some reason..

It is actually best to let Windows decide which HAL to use. In case the program does not recognize some of your hardware, such as multiple processors, the chipset on your system board, etc, then you may have to use the F5 setup function.
Please note that if you don't know what a HAL is, you should not be messing with advanced setup functions.
Not a slam, just facts.

I'm sorry Dave but I'm afraid I can't do that. Okay, not that HAL. HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer and you can read all about it over here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_abstraction_layer

Basically it allows the operating system to communicate with hardware without knowing every single piece of hardware in the system, it also allows the same operating system to operate on different hardware with little modification. I have no idea how this applies to a setup though.

Don't start it up!!! It will go crazy and try to kill you. Its true, I saw a documentary on the same thing.
You'll say " Open Microsoft Office HAL."
and it will respond, "I can't do that teal..."
"Open Microsoft Office HAL!"
"I'm sorry teal... I can't do that."
Then it will try to kill you in some nefarious way, probably electrocution or some deadly virus (I hear PCs have a lot of those)
