All the above ideas are really good - but why not incorporate some black board paint also, creating an activity wall. The paint is available from all DIY stores and is really good, you could put a small shelf on the wall for the crayons - the kids will love it!

How about base black but with lots of UV colours and a UV light so it all glows in the dark.
With UV(ie flourescent) teddies and a starfield above.
Or say pain tthe sky on the ceiling and splatter Flourecesnt ot glow in the dark paint over the clouds and sky so at night it glows in diff colours.
Also 7 year olds daughter? is soon going to want a room to herself as growing up.
Mirrors opposite each other make the room feel bigger.
UV wool looks like lasers with a UV light, think spirogaph effects.
And you can make all sorts of stuff with coloured florescent material;
With maybe white sheets like tents on the walls during the day.

Our 7yr old also shares a room with his baby brother we let our 7yr old pick from a few themes he liked he picked Army so we painted the bottom half a dark cream and the top a medium type green color and the border was army stars we put the border in the middle of the two colors. it looks really nice and could be for any age, I'm pretty sure we bought the border from Wal-Mart if not then Target!

You have two options. You can divide the room in half and give each their own "style," or you can go for a gender-neutral theme.
Orange, green and yellow are colors that are not associated with a specific gender. Themes you might choose would be zoo, space, beach/ocean, puppies & kittens, or medieval.
You could let the kids make their own artwork. Buy blank canvas and turn them loose, then mount them on the wall. This link will send you to a website with a wonderful artist that does children's paintings - it would be a great starting point for a room. http://www.speedyartonline.com/gallery/oil-painting/item-EI-0262-Z--Unfamiliar_Artists-Children-The_Children.asp

Are you any good at art? Because if you are, you should totally do a fantasy theme, like a big blue backdrop with clouds. You could just leave it like that, or maybe paint a dragon for the boy and a princess for the girl (or the other way round if that's the way things are lol). And a castle, with turrets! I can't wait to have kids... so much fun!!!

split the room in half or bunkbed
customize by random mix
one side girl or one side boy
one side a totally grown up girls room.
maybe put a princess bedsheet from "disney store"
pink lamp
you know "home depot" has many magazines that can help you get some good ideas. go to the children section [ paint section also ]
pick up a warm peach or pink / purple color for your daughters room. decided by parent.
the other a babyboy [ airplanes , cars, toys for boys ]
maybe puppy dogs dolls for decor.
paint his room green or blue, mix it up with yellow, for warmness [ since hes a baby ]
as he grows older maybe video games. [ not too much ]

How about an "under the sea" theme - with aqua walls and sea life transfers (or a mural if you're a good artist!) in bright colours, like orage and yellow fish, pink octopus, blue whale, ship wreck etc?
Or a "safari theme", with yellow walls with green trees, and safari animals, like giraffe, elephants, lions etc?

id definately go for dividing the room gives them theyre own little space.use room dividers or ikea do blinds that are on a runner slide back to open room up again.my son is 7 and we let him choose colours for his room last year we ended up with pale blue on ceiling (coz it,ll look like the sky!) red on the walls!(just because it,s his favourite colour) and a green carpet!! (yip coz it,s like grass!) you need sunglasses on before you go in but he loves it and at the end of day it,s his room.let them have some fun with colour you can always just shut the door like me.lol

We painted one wall of our kid's room with a giant mural of under the sea. I did most of the painting, but my daughter painted some of the sea creatures. (She painted ones which I had never heard of but found out about later). Use matt emulsion of the background and acrylic for the sea creatures.
We then bought quilt covers and pillowcases in a matching underwater theme.
