You'll need to stay away from themes like Dora The Explorer and Sponge Bob. They outgrow them too quickly and you end up doing the room over again. Try a circus theme. That works well for both sexes. You could paint a mural on the wall. You could even buy fabric and drape it on the ceiling to look like a tent. Add some clowns. If a circus theme doesn't work for you just use your basic bold colors like red, blue, green and yellow. Make balloons out of fabric with batting inside with thin cords hanging down and hang them on the wall. I think you can buy a pattern for them. They are very easy to make.

Animal themes work well for unisex rooms. You can go with farm, jungle, forest and circus animal themes. Fantasy themes work well also. Think castles knights, princesses, fairies, dragons, unicorns... Under the sea themes work well also, not sponge Bob. Think aqua walls, Fish oyster shells with pearls, sea horses, mermaids. If you don't want to add a theme to the room go for unisex colors. Sherbert colors work well, Yellow, green , orange, raspberry. Mix and match them up. Primary colors work well also. Just stay away from the baby pinks and blues. Pick out a few things that you like and let your children choose from them. Children will love a room that they helped choose.

How about base black but with lots of UV colours and a UV light so it all glows in the dark. With UV(ie flourescent) teddies and a starfield above. Or say pain tthe sky on the ceiling and splatter Flourecesnt ot glow in the dark paint over the clouds and sky so at night it glows in diff colours. Also 7 year olds daughter? is soon going to want a room to herself as growing up. Mirrors opposite each other make the room feel bigger. UV wool looks like lasers with a UV light, think spirogaph effects. And you can make all sorts of stuff with coloured florescent material; With maybe white sheets like tents on the walls during the day.

When decorating I love the ideas and tips on Dulux website... http://www.dulux.co.uk sites currently down, but try later... its goes through the size of the room, the furniture currently in their, the theme your trying to achieving, and you can create you own virtual room..

I personally wouldn't do it any gender related colour.. go for oranges, white, green, yellow and make it quite fun and colourful.. Use themes with shapes, or clowns or Disney characters (Donald duck, mickey / Minny mouse etc)..

Hi Just an idea. split the walls with a dado rail or you can split them with a picture rail, you can then have a theme for your son and daughter. ( Picture Rail) paint cartoon clouds, and stencil balloons, Kites and Rainbows etc.
( Dado Rail ) Make your theme on Pastel shades like 1 Wall, Cinderella 1 Wall Clowns this will contrast as all should be done in pastel shades

Hi there. Difficult mix of kids to please, but we got around it by adopting themes from Disney's Aladdin. A flying carpet rug, then wall design of moorish arches was quite straightforward. Colours of lighte purples with gold, background of city - the city of the east (at least from the Disney view!) is essentially white and a bit boxlike. Furniture to treasure chests, some coloured nets for your daughters bed, tasselly cushions - very 1001 nights.
Good luck, Steve.

I would personally keep one side for girl and one side for boy and decorate each say corner for them accordingly perhaps one side themed on cars or transport for boy and one side with princesses or fairies on they each have there own part of the room and perhaps have a small foldable partition so they feel they have their own space or decorate neutral and let them choose some pictures to display on their side to spruce it up a little mutli coloured furniture and cupboards will help

good luck

I did my sons room all different colours - each wall is different - one blue, one orange, one yellow and one green - sounds sick I know but it does look good and is bright and colourful! Ceiling painted white with luminous stars stuck on! The door is also painted blue and the pipework for rads is white and the radiator is blue against yellow wall!

Loud and colourful - some cheap Ikea mirror tiles bounce the light around!
