G'day
There are pluses and minuses for every capital cities in Australia. For Melbourne!!! Wellll... where should I start?
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day like last month, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Night Life... hmmmm... I'll say the centre of nite activities will be Crown Casino and Docklands. Altho there are still plenty of cafe's and clubs scattered around the suburbs as well.
9. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc. Inner Melbourne attractions are like The Aquarium, Rialto Tower, St. Kilda Beach, Crown Entertainment Complex and Botanical Garden to name few.
10. In regards to employment rate, Victoria (the state where Melbourne is) is the 4th after Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland, but still better than NSW, SA or Tasmania. Just read the 3rd article from The Australian Newspaper.
11. Population... I dun think any Australian cities are overpopulated. Some towns are actually underpopulated. If you ever visited any cities in Australia, you can see that even during the peak business hours, the people in the capital cities are still less compared with say... New York or any cities in Asia.
Running out of ideas, but I hope that I can at least give you some more informations that have been provided by the answerers before me.
Good luck and welcome to Melbourne. I've been living in Melbourne for 16 years, visited some other capital cities in Australia and still giving Melbourne 10/10 for the best city.

All Australia's cities have points in favour and points against. The prettiest and friendliest - and cheapest - is Hobart. Adelaide is next cheapest followed by Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. I have lived in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney and have visited all the others frequently. I enjoy them all. The southern cities, can get cold in winter and all can get very hot in summer. Brisbane would have the least variable climate but it is very much wetter in summer than Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth, as is Sydney. The amount and variety of nightlife is linked to the size of the city. Sydney has the most with Melbourne a close second. Hobart would have the least but you can still have a lot of fun in Hobart. Tasmania makes the best beer with Cascade and Boags both great. Adelaide makes the worst in West End and Southwark but has a great beer as well in Coopers. Otherwise beers are of a high standard and some of the boutique beers brewed in the pubs are outstanding. You will find these in all cities if you look. It really depends on your interests. Read about the various cities and choose for yourself. Whichever you chose, you will enjoy it.

All Australia's cities have their advantages. They are all safe, clean and easy going. I like Perth but it is too far from anywhere else. My own preference is Sydney or Brisbane but Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart are great cities too.
Why not look at the various State newspapers online to get an idea of the cities and the cost of living there. On Saturdays the classified ads will show you the job market and house prices.
Sydney - The Sydney Morning Herald
Melbourne - The Age
Brisbane - The Courier mail
Adelaide - The Advertiser
Hobart - The Mercury
Perth - The West Australian

I'm migrating to Australia from Venezuela and I made the exact same question a couple of months ago. While your needs and mine are different, I wound up choosing Melbourne for many reasons. Even though it's the second most populated city, there are heaps of things to do. The music/theater scene is great, they have the F1 race and the Australian tennis open, there are a few beaches (although not like in Queensland) and it's only a three hour drive to the ski resorts. Housing is less expensive than in Sydney, although it's more expensive than in Perth or Adelaide. Well, That's just my opinion.

Melbourne is the most beautiful capital city to live in - Brisbane is great to visit, Sydney, well you may want to visit but once you get there you will want to go home.
Melbourne is nice and clean, very friendly people, lots of restaurants and not as pompus as Sydney. Melbourne has AFL - best sport in the world!!!! Great public transport system, great employment opportunities, and although it not cheap to buy a property like Tasmania and Adelaide, the houses are reasonable compared to wages.
So much to see and do in Melbourne, once you come you will never want to leave!!
GO MELBOURNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All Australian cities have their good points, but at the moment Perth probably suits your stated requirements best. However, due to the current boom the Perth house prices are quite high and this is slowly flowing onto rental properties.

Perth is pretty overrated. It's isolated, hot and boring. I like Brisbane and Melbourne is just beautiful with its architecture and culture. Sydney is very picturesque. Canberra was nice and green, I was surprised that many people find it boring, I found it quite enjoyable.

I'd say go to Melbourne. Great city to live in. Lots of jobs. safe and clean. Vibrant and it's not overcrowded, but it's certainly no backwater either
