The key is encoded, you will have to take it to a Ford Dealership and have it programmed to start the car

As the others have said, your car is fitted with a transponder. This prevents the engine from starting unless the key responds with the correct electrical signal when a current is passed through it. Prevents the car being easily hot wired. Even if they break your ignition, they won't be able to generate the right electrical signals to start the car.

A key without a chip will open the doors and turn in the ignition, but not start the car, as you said, a theft light with flash warning you that it can't start using that key. You should have a master key/key with a chip in it that starts the car, you'll need to take this to a ford dealership or a professional mechanic and have a copy made. The master key is what you should be looking for, it's often red in colour and is the key that can be easily copied, duplicate keys which aren't the master key will start the car but are hard to copy.

If you've lost that key you may well need a replacement engine management system/ignition. Which is more than a little expensive.. Or you might just get away with a replacement master key, which will again be pretty damn expensive.

There is often a small identifying chip inside the original key. It communicates with a sensor inside the ignition of the car and allows the engine to turn over. The key you had made isn't programmed for your car or it may not have a chip inside it at all. the dealership has found another way to screw you! You have to talk to them to get another key.

Your Stang has a PATS system on it. The ignition key is coded with a chip in the key. This will prevent someone making a copy of your key and using it to steal your car. A trip to the dealership will be required to get a key.

Hi : I have found more than not . Auto keys should be made at a Locksmith or Auto Dealer .. Key's made at shopping centers or small stores are at best hit or miss . Sometimes you can take steel wool or emery paper and rub the key . This will remove small burs off the teeth . If your key is coded you most certainly need to see a dealer ..

Because the Ford key has a tiny black chip in the "black:" piece above the key part. It may open the door but it will not start it.
