DFT is caught in the open ocean, using nets that are capable of only catching tuna. Dolphins are very often caught up in fishing nets and drown, because they cannot get to the surface to breath.
DFT nets allow the dolphins to escape with very little effort.

Dolphin Friendly Tuna means that no dolphins were supposedly harmed or killer in the net process of getting the tuna. That doesn't protect them from the pollution from the boat and the factory. Technically, it's not.

The nets the use to catch the tuna have larger holes in them to enable dolphins to swim out and escape. But this does not always work and many dolphins are killed each year when catching tuna. So maybe we should start eating dolphin too?

I means that they TRY not to get dolphins stuck in their nets while fishing for tuna. Some still are killed.

It means that the nets they used to catch the tuna isn't the type to catch dolphins as well. Often the nets are illegal which ultimately trap dolphins in them.

Not really. The current president lowered the standards for what dolphin safe now means. Now you have to kill under a certain amount of dolphins and use nets where the dolphin has a chance to escape but if they snag a dolphin in it and kill it it still is considered dolphin safe.

dolphins are cetaceans which unfortunately may easily end up in fishermen's nets depending on the fishing techniques used, so by 'dolphin friendly' we mean that no dolphin was injured or killed while tuna fishing.
