Windows XP was or is really just an improved version of Windows 98. There are actually very significant changes between XP and Vista.
To name a few, I'll start with the navigation of the OS. It's a bit different and a little harder to get used to on Vista. You still have your traditional folder system. Instead of all your documents being stored under My Documents, they are stored in separate folders. Documents, Music, Pictures, and Games. All of these folders are stored in a folder named after your user name.
The Start Menu has changed, where all your programs are in a collapsible menu, giving your desktop a less cluttered feeling. Of course, the desktop icons are big enough for the blind to see unfortunately.
Windows Vista is fairly new so there aren't any known viruses out for it yet while Windows XP is a feast for the electronic germs. This is something I found to be very important. Windows Vista is very security intensive where Windows XP was just about function. Whatever problems that arose were yours to deal with. Vista even has a new feature that offers solutions when an error occurs on your computer, so you don't have to waste hours on the phone with some tech support guy who can barely speak English.
It is true that Vista takes quite a bit of RAM, but that's the way computers and computer technologies develop.
All in all, Vista is a complete revamp of XP. There are some tiny differences, but these are the major ones that I have noticed in using the program.
If you're asking because you're looking to switch, I would stick with XP for a while. Vista does have a few compatibility problems and it's fairly new. There are still some bugs that haven't been worked out in it yet.
