It really depends on what you are looking for. There is a lot of freeware and shareware software out there. I would say do a google search of the software type you are looking for and then add freeware and or shareware to see if there are sites that offer it.

Depends what you want but VideoHelp.com is a good place to start. Just click on the Tools section in the header bar. Lots of them are free and for the others download a bit torrent client and then go to one of there sites. Torrent Spy is very good as people tend to let you know if it's any good or not.

download.com.
reviews from editors, reviews from users ( who have downloaded and used the product), And the capability to see the negative and positive reviews separately ( I like to know hwther a software is difficult to install, or if it hogs the RAM or gives annoying popups (like Real mediaplayer)etc. before downloading), besides the transparent rating system have made me stay loyal to this site.
PS- this is for legal downloads. There's a lot of good stuff in free domain, for the rest, there is torrent technology.

Definately try download.com. Failing that, download a torrent client such as Azureus and download from websites such as mininova.org and meganova.org. You can get full software from there but take your time and sift through- some but NOT majority have viruses because of the sender.

Find them on the download page of the company you are buying the software from.
Don't steal software. It is illegal, raises the costs of everything software related, and makes you prone to downloading viruses and such.

Want more than the usual downloading?
Download Bittorent, uTorrent, BitComet, or Azureus at any of those sites, then install. Then go to http://www.torrentpond.com and search for the software you want to download, "free."
You can also try Limewire, but use caution.
