Lightning not only affects TV but also every electronic equiments.
These equipments atract the lightning and the ligjtning can get inside the equipments resulting in damage. Yes, we have earthing facitility that avoids / nuetralizes the lightning affect. Earthing tries to avoid the lightning entering our wirings. But, it is always a good habit to switch off and take off the main switches of our electric and electronic goods while lightning. I have seen the damage of TV set due to lightning.

Lighting can destroy the circuit boards on your tv that it would be best to throw it away. You could buy a surge protector, or you could make a knot on your extention cord. that could do the trick.
