We are in the process of buying an older home with beautiful hardwood floors throughout. The only problem is when the previous owners decided to pain the house they obviously never thought of covering the floor or even using tape to limit the mess.

I was wondering if any of you have any ideas of how to remove the paint splotches, but not destroy the hardwoods. They are the real deal that is found in older homes, not the cheap laminate that you find now a days. Thanks for any and all help.

The floors have not been refininshed in years so not much poly left on them.

Don't use any scraper type tools or even your finger nails, as they can scratch the floor. Assuming the floors are in good condition, and the finish has not worn through, try a solvent such as paint thinner, pour a little on and let it sit there for a few moments, then try rubbing it off with a clean soft rag or towel. If that fails, there are commercial paint removal products on the market, some, like goof-off, are very strong, test the product in an inconspiuous place, closets are good test areas. If that doesn't work, you may need to refinish the floors, or possibly re-coat the floors, which involves lightly sanding the top-coat and then re-applying another coat of finish, and should be done professionally. Good luck!

I have had this problem before also.

It seems to me there is a product that softens the paint and with care not damage the varnishes on the wood floor. I think it is Goo Gone although I am not positive. Take a little brush and gently cover the paint and monitor it till it is soft enough to clean up.

Talk to a paint department person, they may have a suggestion.

Good Luck.

Paint thiner will take off the paint, but it will also ruin your hard wood finish. Exacto knife will also take off the finish and scrastch it. Use a Q-tip and a small cup with a little bit of vegetable oil. Go around and dab all the splatter with the oil and then let it sit for a day or two. Then go back and use a plastic spoon (plastic knife's serations will miss the paint, so a spoon works much better) and just scrape with the plastic spoon and they should come off. It's going to be time consuming addressing each splatter, but it's the only way to do it right.

Good news. The wall paint is latex. The hardwood floors have a polyurethane finish. You can buy a product, called "Goof Off," that is designed to take dried latex paint off. It is available at hardware and paint stores.

Tiny small drips can be removed with your finger nail. Little bigger ones I would use an Exacto Knife and pick at them. Anything you use could scratch the polyurethane. So, It will be a long and time consuming task. Don't use things like Mr. Clean Eraser or those green cleaning pads. They will definately scratch it. Good Luck.
