I am a diabetic and I have just lost 66 lbs. If you will count your calories and carbohydrates (generally speaking 15 carbohydrates is one food exchange) and can find out how many calories you need to maintain your weight this is your key. what I am about to say next is very very important. reduce your calorie intake by 200 calories. per day. You well start to lose weight, slowly. DO NOT say to yourself that if I eat less calories I will lose the weight faster, you do not want to lose the weight faster. For a few reasons (1) You didn't get the way you are over night. (2) the faster that you lose the weight the faster it will come back. (3) You need to re-learn how to and what to eat. (4) You don't want the yo-yo effect that fast weight loss creates that is lose fast gain it back and some on top of that.
A lb.=3500 calories cutting back a peice of toast with butter you can lose 2 to 3 lbs a month. This will trick your system into thinking that everything as it should be and you won't gain the weight back. I can't see so I will tell you about me. I am 5'11" my maintance calories should be around 2000 calories a day I eat about 1800 calories a day and I keep my carbohydrates down to under 28 exchanges a day. The shorter you are the less calories and exchanges. Please remember the you are a female and you will have a higher fat content than a male (breast and butt) and you will lose slower but even a lb. per month is a loss and not a gain. As long as you count the calories and carbohydrates in a piece of candy you can have a piece evey day.
Edit note; Exercise is great but remember that muscle weighs more than fat and may discourage you as you don't see a weight loss of the few lbs a month that you are expecting. I would say exercise but with some moderation

Chocolate is good, but the sugar inside it is a real killer for your health. Therefore, tell your hubby that if he wants a healthy wife, to buy chocolate sweetened with the alcohol Xylitol (tastes exactly the same, since it is a molecule similar to sugar but with an important difference, it does not add to your fat, and also does not get you high as common alcohol). Russel Stove and Hershey's make it.
Best way to loose fat is to exercise and to keep away from breads, sweets and pastas, but specially from sodas. Drink lots of water, and if you want a little taste to it squeeze some lemon and sweeten with Splenda (which also does not add to your waist line).

I'm a chocolate "freak" too. First hide the Chocolate.... put it in the back of the freezer. Give some away to friends or enemies.
I limit myself to one piece a day.
Eat a well balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies; limit your red meat intake to once a week.
And exercise; walk; use the stairs; dance; swim;
Get your mother to take walks with you. Have hubby join a dance group with you... I bet they could stand to lose the weight and get in better shape too.

the best way to lose weight is to stop eating sweets, bread, . the only way is hunger. let me ask you a question- Have you ever see a fat person in German prisons during WW2. the answer is NO. That is because the eat little. The second way is to exercise

Exercise and watch your serving sizes. Sit your hubby and mother-in-law down and politely tell them you are trying to lose weight, they should understand. Good Luck.

save time and money during the week by buying lean protein such as chicken breasts in bulk and cooking a weeks worth on sunday night
