My personal instructor told me that I should lose 9 pounds of fat and gain muscle. I'm 5'3 and 106 pounds, and I had anorexia last year and I'm still trying to recover, but he wants me to be 110 pounds. It scares the hell out of me because I feel like I'm going back to my old anorexic ways. My lowest weight was 98 and my highest was 110. And my personal trainer wanting me to gain weight to the point of the weight i started dieting before makes me really scared.

I'm supposed to do weight training/whole body workout 3 times a week with some cardio. I want to lose inches in my stomach, my arms and my thighs. But him wanting me to be 110 pounds makes me scared because I'm scared I'll look bulky.

So I'm asking to whoever is reading this right now if it's possible to look thinner and lose inches while gaining weight? I want to lose sizes and inches and look thinner, but my personal instructor wants me to gain weight. What do you think? I'm becoming a bit hesitant already.

Will I look thinner even though I'm going to gain weight?

Yes...muscle weight more..it is more dense...so you can look thinner than someone of the same weight with fat....plus muscle burns more calories...so you will have that going for you. at 110 you will not look bulky....plus being a female you do not have enough testosterone in you to get bulky. Do not worry...You will actually look and feel better than you do right now...

Natalia, I am a Fitness Trainer also and I can tell you that your instructor is correct. You will not bulk up or gain any fat by doing weight training exercises. Your muscles will become toned (by that we mean more dense and firm as they should be in a healthy person). If you eat correctly and continue to exercise you will tone your tummy as well and look thinner, even if the scales show more weight, as they should, because muscle is heavier than fat. DO NOT pay any attention to the scale, only to the measurement around your waist. This is the best measurement of your fitness because it is proportional to your body fat content. Your tummy is the first place where fat will deposit if it is in excess in the metabolism. So, keep an eye on it and forget about the weight issue OK?
Good luck to you.

Listen to the fitness instructor above!!!

Besides that, most men don't find "bony" very attractive. Put some muscle on the thighs, calves, butt and arms, and I think you'll find them attractive, not bulky.

Don't worry about looking like a bodybuilder. The routine your trainer is suggesting can't possibly do that to you. That would take hours upon hours in the gym every day.

3 days a week is really the bare minimum for general health.

Yes you can look thinner while gaining weight if it is muscle weight. you will not look bulky at 110, you are 5'3".
You will gain muscle from the exercise and that will add weight to your body, but it will also increase your metabolism and burn calories, causing fat to go away.

Ok I believe you should not be listening to your personal instructor unless he has some serious qualifications. Anorexia is quite serious and you should be following DOCTORS instructions. Depending on how far and long you where anorexic a lot of the weight you put on will be soft tissue and organs rebuilding itself. This is why doctors add weight slowly.

Its not as simple as following a bodybuilders diet and exercise routine. Its actually quite dangerous.

But like everyone said muscle weighs more than fat.
